That’s when a dynamic mic is used for its polar pattern. So the cardioid and super Cardioid mic which picks up sound mainly from the front and sides and almost nothing from the back. Which is most commonly used . An Omni-directional mic picks up sound from all around, and they are mostly not used in live sounds An condenser mic having large diaphragm are commonly front or side address which means you have to be sure you point it in the right direction.
